JStereonet

Plot orientations, assess rock-slope kinematics, and explore fracture networks.

All apps require a verified JWGeotech account and acceptance of the current Terms. Opening or reloading the app requires an internet connection to verify sign-in. An already authenticated tab can continue through temporary outages until its verified session expires; Browser and Native solving in JSlope and JRunout retain their licence requirements. Sign-out or session expiry locks the workspace and retains unsaved work in the tab. Signing in does not upload local project files.

Open JStereonet to use the complete workspace after signing in with a free account.

JStereonet is a browser-based stereographic kinematic analysis tool for rock slopes and jointed rock masses. It plots orientation data on a lower-hemisphere equal-angle stereonet and evaluates common orientation-controlled failure modes.

The app is intended for:

  • organizing dip and dip-direction measurements
  • reviewing discontinuity sets and stereonet patterns
  • assigning or clustering joint sets
  • plotting poles, great circles, intersections, density contours, and symbolic metadata
  • screening planar sliding, wedge sliding, flexural toppling, and direct and oblique toppling
  • building Simple DFN joint-patch models from assigned and custom sets

The app is not a replacement for full geotechnical design, site investigation, structural mapping, limit-equilibrium analysis, numerical modelling, or professional judgement. Reported percentages are kinematic feasibility indicators, not probability of failure.

JStereonet is available for use with a free account, with all features included and no paid licence required. Sign in through the JWG portal to open the workspace. Signing out or losing access to account services leaves your workspace, calculations, and current edits available.

Right sidebarUse Plot Settings / Results (DFN Settings / Results in DFN) to choose a full-height inspector view. Drag its outside edge to resize its width; switching views preserves edits.
Status barRead data/analysis and export status, restore minimized dialogs, and toggle great circles, poles, intersections, grid, 3D view, and density.

Dialogs use the same floating window, resizing, focus, and Escape behavior as JSlope. Press F10 to enter the application menu. Theme and left-sidebar preferences are stored independently for Stereonet. Native .jst SQLite projects use database schema 1 and payload 19. Transfer work using the same supported native format; browser autosaves are local to their site.

The View menu's Configure Themes editor manages independent Light and Dark profiles, including presets, viewport colour, fonts, and Liquid Glass optics. Changes preview immediately; Apply persists them and Cancel restores the previous appearance. Theme changes do not modify project data or history.

New, Open, and sample replacement use Save / Don't Save / Cancel when the current work has unsaved changes. Invalid raw orientation edits must be corrected before saving; Cancel keeps them in place. Save As chooses another .jst destination; browsers without file-system pickers download the project instead.

File commands are blocked while a dialog owns keyboard focus. Tab stays in the active dialog; Escape closes the innermost popup and restores focus. Smaller windows place the menu on its own row; narrow screens stack the panes.

Help → Documentation, F1, and ? outside an input open this website in a new tab. Your app workspace stays open.
