Kinematic Analysis

Screen planar, wedge, and toppling modes and compare sensitivity scenarios.

The Kinematic Analysis left pane selects the failure mode and engineering parameters while the stereonet and results remain visible. Open it from the rail or Analysis menu; sensitivity controls are in the same pane.

Common Inputs

InputRange or valuesMeaning
Failure ModeNone, Planar Sliding, Wedge Sliding, Flexural Toppling, Direct + Oblique TopplingSelects analysis type.
Global Orientation FilterRead-only summaryReports the non-destructive subset configured from the stereonet toolbar.
Slope Dip0 to 90 degreesDip of the slope face when required.
Slope Dip Direction0 to 360 degreesDip direction of the slope face.
Friction Angle0 to 45 degreesShared friction angle used by kinematic checks.
Lateral Limit0 to 90 degreesAngular side-limit window for relevant modes.

Failure Modes

ModeWhat is testedMain output
None (Stereonet Only)No kinematic envelope. Optional raw intersections.Planes loaded and intersection count.
Planar SlidingIndividual planes that daylight and exceed friction angle within lateral limits.Compact table of total poles and critical percentages, including an All row.
Wedge SlidingIntersections of plane pairs that satisfy wedge movement criteria.Compact table of total intersections and Primary, Secondary, and Critical percentages, including an All row.
Flexural TopplingIndividual planes with poles in the toppling window and beyond the slip limit.Compact table of total poles and critical percentages, including an All row.
Direct + Oblique TopplingPlane intersections meeting direct or oblique toppling thresholds.A compact two-column table with the All total for intersections, Direct, Oblique, and Critical percentages, total poles, and base-plane percentage.

The live Results inspector shows one Kinematic Analysis Results (Failure Mode) table. Category counts and mode, context, filter, and explanation summaries are not repeated in the table. All totals include unassigned No Set data; No Set is not listed as a separate set or set pair. Direct + Oblique Toppling lists each metric on its own row under the All column to fit a narrow Results sidebar. Percentage headings omit %; the values include the percent sign.

Direct-Toppling Convention

Direct-toppling base-plane poles and intersection vectors are classified using circular regions on the stereonet. The primary region lies within the lateral limits and above pole/intersection plunge 90° - slope dip. The friction circle separates sliding base planes (zone 1) from non-sliding release planes (zone 2). Outside the lateral limits, oblique zone 3 uses plunge 90° - friction angle as its outer bound.

The base-plane classification uses those circular zones rather than a separate planar daylight envelope. Inward-dipping base planes are excluded from the reported zones. These geometric results do not calculate forces or a factor of safety.

Sensitivity Analysis

InputValues or rangeMeaning
Sensitivity AnalysisOn/offEnables parameter sweep for supported modes.
Sensitivity VariableSlope Dip, Slope Dip Direction, Friction AngleParameter to vary.
Range Min / Range MaxMode-dependent degreesSweep range.
Step0.1 to 360 degreesIncrement between sampled values.

When sensitivity is enabled, the chart appears below the sensitivity inputs in the Kinematic Analysis left pane. Its x-axis uses a 1–2–5 nice-spacing scale selected for approximately five to six ticks, and the configured range minimum and maximum are always labelled even when they are not aligned with the nice spacing. Gridlines follow the X and Y axis ticks. Hover the chart, or focus it with the keyboard, to project dotted guides from the nearest calculated sample to the axes and show its exact X and Y values below the graph. Multi-series charts show one horizontal guide and value for each series. Values are not interpolated between calculated samples. All active orientations includes unassigned No Set orientations; unassigned data does not appear as a separate sensitivity scope. Sensitivity is not duplicated in the right Results inspector.

Named analysis scenarios capture the current face geometry, failure mode, and orientation filter together with the critical metric. Applying a scenario restores the shared filter and updates both the stereonet and kinematic results without changing the orientation dataset.
