Orientation Editor
Edit, validate, and organize dip, dip direction, joint sets, and custom data columns.
The fixed-width orientation table is always available to the left of the stereonet. This is the main data-entry surface for discontinuity measurements. Scroll horizontally inside the table to reach Set and custom metadata columns.
Required Columns
| Column | Range | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Dip | 0 to 90 degrees | Plane dip below horizontal. |
| Dip Direction | 0 to 360 degrees | Azimuth of maximum downward dip. |
| Set | Text | Read-only name derived from assignment windows. Unassigned orientations show a blank cell; analyses and CSV export use No Set. U is an ordinary set name. |
Custom Columns
Custom columns store metadata such as lithology, domain, mapping station, roughness, persistence, confidence, or structure type. Custom metadata can be used by Symbolic Plot to draw poles by category or numeric value.
Table Controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Add Row | Inserts one blank row below the selected rows, or at the bottom with no selection. |
| Append rows | Prompts for the Number of rows and appends that many blank rows to the bottom, regardless of selection. Enter a whole number greater than zero. |
| Delete Row | Removes the selected rows. |
| Move Up / Move Down | Moves the selected rows one position. |
| Column | Adds a new custom metadata column. |
| Clear | Clears the orientation table. |
Row controls are in the table footer. Append rows is the downward-arrow-to-line button beside Add Row. Cancel or Escape closes its prompt without adding rows.
Right-click a row number to open Cut, Copy, Paste, Insert row and Delete row. Insert row adds one blank row immediately above the clicked row; Delete row removes the clicked row. Right-clicking a data cell keeps the clipboard menu. Deleting the last row leaves a blank entry row available.
Editing Behavior
- A trailing blank row is kept available for fast entry.
- Invalid dip or dip-direction cells are highlighted.
- Paste supports spreadsheet-style grids and preserves blank cells, including blank metadata values and complete blank rows within the copied range.
- Selected cells can be copied and pasted.
- Custom column headers can be renamed or deleted.
- The analysis refreshes after committed table changes.
Set cells remain selectable and copyable. Typing, cut and Delete cannot write their values. Mixed-range pastes skip Set values without shifting following metadata columns. Invalid or incomplete measurements cannot retain a set assignment.
Imported labels
When a Set column is mapped in Import Orientations, choose Generate set windows (default) or Import as metadata. The preview shows actual resulting assignments. Generated windows may include other poles within their geometry. Append adds windows to same-named sets and evaluates the whole dataset; Replace rebuilds assignment definitions from incoming groups.
Metadata mode preserves source labels in a normal Imported Set column, choosing a numbered name if needed to avoid overwriting metadata. Actual assignments still come from windows. Appending data without Set labels uses existing windows. Import is undoable as one transaction.
