JStereonet

Plot Controls

Navigate the stereonet, filter orientations, and control visible plot layers.

The plot can show a 2D stereonet or a 3D stereonet view. Visibility toggles are available in Plot Settings and the bottom status bar.

In 2D, scroll the mouse wheel or trackpad to zoom around the pointer and drag to pan. The small reset button in the upper-right corner restores the fitted view. With the canvas focused, +/- zoom, arrow keys pan, and Home or 0 resets. Zoom and pan remain outside project JSON and engineering history.

Both renderers cover the entire workspace behind the floating panels, as in JSlope. The initial view and Reset/Fit use the area left unobstructed by the current panes and plot controls. Opening, closing or resizing a pane updates the default fit. Once you zoom or pan manually, the view stays in place until you reset it; the next fit uses the current layout.

Hover over a pole to see its orientation row and current metadata, including custom columns. Click it to select the complete source row in the Orientations table; the pane opens and scrolls to that row. This works in both 2D and 3D and respects the active orientation filter. Dragging the plot does not select rows.

When set-assignment tools are enabled, the left mouse button retains its assignment action. Use the middle or right button to pan the 2D view. Finish drawing a set window before zooming or panning so its orientation bounds remain stable.

Orientation Filter

The filter chip above the stereonet is the only place where the global filter is edited. It provides All orientations, Selected orientation rows, Specific sets, and Metadata modes. Kinematic Analysis shows the same filter as a read-only summary. Filtering is non-destructive: the orientation table keeps every row while the 2D/3D plot, density, set means, intersections, kinematic results, reports, and analysis exports use only matching orientations.

Selecting any table cell includes that cell's entire orientation row. Set labels use exact case-insensitive matching. Metadata mode provides an ordered Boolean rule list. Rules joined by AND must all match; AND is evaluated before OR, so A OR B AND C means A OR (B AND C). A metadata column may be repeated in several rules.

Qualitative rules select one or more exact, case-insensitive values and can include blank cells. Quantitative rules support equals, not equals, less than, less than or equal, greater than, greater than or equal, inclusive between, blank, and not blank. Auto type uses quantitative controls only when every nonblank value in the full valid dataset is numeric; mixed and all-blank columns use qualitative controls. Column profiles and dropdown values always come from the full dataset, not the filtered subset.

Incomplete filters or filters with no matches show an empty stereonet frame and suppress kinematic calculations instead of retaining stale results. The chip reports the active mode, rule count, and matching count. Clear filter restores all valid orientations.

Switching between filter modes preserves the criteria entered for each mode. Within Metadata mode, changing a rule's column or type also preserves its previous condition and restores it when that column or type is selected again. Only Clear filter or Remove rule intentionally discards those settings.
