Set Assignment

Create persistent named sets with editable stereonet windows.

Named sets own one or more curved assignment windows. Every valid orientation is assigned from these windows before display or analysis filters are applied. New measurements and orientation edits automatically update membership. The Set column is read-only; blank cells indicate unassigned orientations.

Create and edit sets

Choose Add set, enter a unique name, then choose Add window on its card. The suggested name is the next available number. Empty sets remain available until deleted. Names are unique without regard to case; No Set is reserved.

Drag between two corners inside the stereonet to create a curved window. Moving the cursor outside the perimeter produces a negative signed plunge and reveals the antipodal portion. Returning inside removes that extension. Crossing the plot while remaining inside never creates a cross-equator extension.

Choose Edit beside a window to reveal four corner handles. Drag a handle while the opposite corner stays fixed. The equator split is a display seam, not a separate editable boundary. Release to commit one undoable resize; Escape or pointer cancellation restores the original geometry. Expand Details to edit the trend start, signed trend span and plunge bounds using the keyboard. Trend spans must be nonzero and no wider than 180°, and minimum plunge must be below maximum plunge. Done exits drawing or editing.

The compact, collapsible set cards show assigned-pole counts, window rows and editable names. Expand statistics and window details for mean pole, mean plane and bounds. Renaming a set updates its styles, filters, analysis scenarios, sensitivity selections and assigned-set DFN options.

Membership and overlaps

Multiple windows in one set form a union, so each pole counts once. Deleting or shrinking a window re-evaluates the remaining windows. A pole outside every window becomes unassigned. Deleting a window keeps its parent set; Delete set removes all of that set's windows.

In Plot Settings, Overlapping set windows offers:

ChoiceResolution
Newest window (default)The most recently created matching window wins. Resizing does not change priority.
Nearest setChoose the smallest axial angle to a candidate set's mean pole, calculated from all poles geometrically inside that set's window union before resolving overlaps. Equal distances or undefined means use newest-window priority.

Wrapped means retain the common-hemisphere vector convention used by set statistics, mean overlays and assigned-set DFN orientations. Filtering does not change the assignment calculation.

Reset set assignments removes all sets and windows, clears the clustering preview and exits drawing/editing. Measurements and metadata remain. Deleted set references are pruned from styles, filters, scenarios and assigned-set DFN options; independently defined custom DFN sets remain. An emptied specific-set filter returns to All Orientations.

Creation, renaming, deletion, reset, resizing and overlap changes participate in project undo/redo, saving and recovery. Windows can also be created on an empty stereonet.
